Lily’s Kitchen

The packaging of Lily’s Kitchen gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling. The artwork is really cool, and words like “Passion & Care” give me the impression it’s a good product. But that’s just marketing, is it really a good product?

Let’s delve into the “Free Run Chicken & Duck recipe…

Testament to the title, we find Chicken as the main ingredient. Duck comes third, giving a combined meat percentage of 42% if you include chicken liver further down the ingredients list. Read the back of most supermarket foods and you’ll find cheap grains as the main ingredients. Speaking of grains, there aren’t any in this food.

It’s worth noting the listed percentages are prior to cooking out the moisture, of which chicken and duck are about 70~80%. That makes the second ingredient, sweet potato, the most significant ingredient in the food. As a source of carbohydrates it’s by far one of the better selections, being low GI and non-allergenic.

Let’s take a step back and have a look at the overall analysis of the food. 22% protein is moderately low for a dog food, as is 11% fat. The real problem with these percentages being low is it means the carbohydrates are high. I estimate 51% carbs, which isn’t a good thing. Carbs aren’t great for dogs.

It’s nice to see chicken liver, abundant in vitamin A, B vitamins, iron, and copper. Peas and lentils are a good source of protein and fibre which are relatively easy for a dog to digest. Some grain free foods seem to be packed with peas which can pose an issue, but in this food they’re not overly prominent. Other inclusions support general wellbeing and joint health, which really rounds off the ingredients nicely.

The minerals are chelated, which means they’re more readily absorbed. This is a tell-tale sign of a good product, and a manufacturer who cares about your dog’s wellbeing.

Overall it’s a good food and worth feeding. If they increased the meat and fat it would be a fantastic food.
