Barking Heads sports some really cool packaging, but cool packaging doesn’t necessarily mean a good product. Thankfully with this food the product is pretty good, but let me explain a little more. Let’s take a look at Big Foot’s “Tender Loving Care”, the chicken recipe…
I estimate the carbs to be approx. 45% of the food, mostly from brown rice and oats. These are two of the better grains to see in a dog food, but it has to be noted account for a large portion of the product. They label the chicken as 50% of the food, but this is before moisture is removed during cooking. Once cooked the chicken constituents will be much less than the grains.

The protein is a reasonable 25%, and the 14% fat is mostly chicken fat as a good source of energy.
There’s nothing unnatural in the food. We find no cheap and nasty grains such as wheat, and no cheap protein-boosters such as corn. There are no nasty chemical preservatives or food colourings either. These are really good things, and if you read the labels on most supermarket brands you’ll see how uncommon “natural” dog foods are.

It’s nice to see joint health accounted for with added glucosamine and chondroitin. These will aid prevention of arthritis or stiff joints, a condition that occurs too often in dogs fed cheaper main brand foods. Lucerne (alfalfa) is rich in vitamins and minerals and an excellent inclusion, as is seaweed for the same reasons.

All in all it’s a decent well thought out food. There are other dog foods out there which have more meat, even in the region of 80%, but Barking Heads is still well worth feeding or adding to a rotation of foods.
